University of Tennessee Assistant Coach;
7 SEC Tournament Championships and 5 SEC Regular Season Championships;
Back-to-Back National Championships (2007 & 2008),
Developed 9 WNBA players including 2013 WNBA MVP Candace Parker.
Learn how to establish a culture in your post players that inspires excellence. Dean Lockwood has developed a long list of WNBA players and wants to pass on his knowledge of every aspect of offensive post play to you.
Coach Lockwood shows you the philosophy, skills, and drills that the Tennessee Lady Volunteers have established in their post players. These exercises have helped Tennessee become one of the greatest college programs in the history of basketball.
Tennessee's Four “Roller Principles” of Post Play
Coach Lockwood describes the technique and terminology Tennessee uses in their four basic fundamentals of post play: getting open, sealing a defender, catching the ball, and scoring simply. WNBA player, Isabelle Harrison, demonstrates how to seal in transition with the “leg whip” and “pin & spin.” Coach Lockwood breaks down every detail the Lady Volunteers use to score by posting up in transition.
Passing and Catching Series
Teammates need to have confidence that when they throw the ball into the post, it won't result in a turnover. You will learn six drills that will help your posts train quick reactions, soft hands, and the ability to go and secure a bad pass. The Stop, Pivot, & Rip drill works on the driving ability of your posts in addition to improving their footwork and passing so they will become multi-dimensional threats from other locations on the floor.
Footwork Series
These five drills will teach your post players how to fight for post position and seal a defender so they can safely receive a pass. Coach Lockwood shows you the “U'ing” technique for maintaining a seal when a defender tries to fight around and deny the post feed. The V-Cut, Seal & Receive drill will train your post players to use the “SEC” concept to set up a defender in order to secure optimal post up position.
Transition Series
Get your post players to sprint for over-the-top passes in transition with the Post Highway Lay-ups drill. Additionally, teach your post players to seal a defender under the rim for easy scoring opportunities with the Tennessee Transition drill.
Finishing Series
Effective post players don't need to have a library of back to the basket moves to be a scoring threat. With great position or offensive rebounding, your players can find plenty of opportunities to score with simple moves at the rim.
The Rapid Fire Finishing drill will get your players to show to the ball and use a quick pivot for power layups. The 180 Turn drill shows how to duck-in for a high/low pass and how to utilize a “quarter turn” pivot to deep scoring position. Coach Lockwood's Intensity Lay-ups will expand the range of your post players' game to the high post, where they can be a threat to drive from the elbows.
Scoring Series
Morph your posts into dominant scorers with nine moves at the block. Coach Lockwood emphasizes developing a go-to move and a counter to go along with back to the basket play. Three of these scoring options show your post players how to extend their range with some face up moves using the “reverse step.”
Game Situations
Coach Lockwood also shows you how Tennessee incorporates all of the previous concepts into their offensive system. You will learn four ways to play your posts in ball screens based on how the defense tries to guard each action. You'll also see how to relocate your posts off dribble penetration for jump shots. Any team with a dangerous post player will have to learn how to counter double teams. Coach Lockwood breaks down three concepts they use based on how the opponent is trying to trap the post. Finally, you will see how your posts can become a scoring threat by setting pin screens in your offense.
This video contains everything you need to develop a dominant post player!
